Art at Towneley

When Towneley Hall was sold to Burnley Corporation only a handful of the family's pictures were left in the building. Today there are almost 1500 oil paintings, sculptures, watercolours and illustrations in the collection.

The collection is strongest in its holdings of paintings by nineteenth century British artists including Sir Edwin Landseer, John William Waterhouse, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, and Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema.

The oil paintings are displayed throughout the Hall and within the Art Gallery.

Watercolours and illustrations are displayed within the
temporary exhibitions programme.
